April 10, Sat., 1:00 pm, Bataan Commemoration Event, Bataan Park, corners of Lomas and Carlisle (next to Walgreens).  An annual event dedicated to the Bataan veterans.  Sponsored by the Bataan-Corregidor Foundation of NM in cooperation with the Filipino American Foundation of NM and Filipino American National Historical Society Rio Grande Chapter.  FREE.

May - Asian/Pacific Heritage Month
May 15, Sat., Santacruzan, an annual Filipino event at the Old Town Plaza.  Starts with Mass at 5:30 pm, St. Felipe de Neri Church followed by procession at the rotonda showcasing the different reynas and rey in Philippine costumes.  FREE.  Food is also free.  Performances on Philippine dances and music, featuring guests:  Maori Group.  Sponsored by the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico with funding from the City of Albuquerque Cultural Office.  Call Maida 903-0202.

May 16, Sun., Festival of Asian Cultures, Civic Plaza, 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.  All day event featuring Asian music, dances, and exhibits from Asian countries with guests:  Maori group.  FREE.  Call Maida 903-0202.

June 7 to 25, 3-week Workshop on Ethnic Music and Dances from Southern Philippines, 11:30 am to 12:15 pm , Monday to Friday, Sandia Preparatory School Summer Program, 532 Osuna Rd NE.  Open to children 8 years & older.  Limited to 20 participants.  Participants will learn two pieces of music & dances (plus puppets): warrior dance and janggay (long-nail) dance.  The class will be divided into two:  dancers and musicians.  They will switch for the other piece.

June 21 to July 2, 2-week Workshop on Ethnic Music and Dances from Southern Philippines, 9:30 to 10:30 am, Mon to Friday.  Performance day:  July 2, Friday, 11:00 am, FREE (open to everybody).  Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth SE.  The same workshop as in Sandia Prep except it is shorter and no puppets will be used.  Registration fee is $5.00 (five dollars) with NO workshop fee.  Limited to 20 participants. Aug. 3 to 6, Wed to Friday, Shadow Puppet Workshop on Tobacco-related Issues, 9:00 am to 3 pm (half day on last day).  Open to Asian communities (other than Chinese, Thai & Vietnamese that already have the groups) that will have four youth participants (9 to 17 years old) and one adult mentor who will sign up before May 30.  Workshop covers information about tobacco and health issues, writing 1-minute skits, making shadow puppets, theater training by Tricklock Theater staff, voicing and performing.  The workshop is meant for 2 1/2 days but last day maybe cancelled if participants will complete workshop.  Participants will bring their puppet show to their own and other Asian communities.  There will be stipends for youth participants and adult mentor.  The workshop will be conducted by youth mentors:  Kevin & Tony Liou, Sumarin Brum, Homie Insisiengmay, Caryn & Fiona Nguyen (current puppeteers) with Tessie Greenfield as facilitator.  Sponsored by the New Mexico Asian Family Center and funded by the NM Tobacco Use Prevention and Control.  Visit www.NMAsianFamilyCenter.org.  Email Tessie Greenfield at puppetnettes@kidstale-nm.com or call 214-5150.
