Pinoys in New Mexico:

There are around 5,000 Filipino Americans (with one race or a combination of other races) in New Mexico in the last Census (Year 2000).  Most of them (around 2,000) live in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and surrounding areas.

The Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico (FAFNM) has a membership of around 500 Filipino Americans (including children) from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and other surrounding areas.  FAFNM has two performing groups: Cultural Dancers and the Kulintang Ensemble of Alb. (Visit Performers).  During Christmas, FAFNM has a caroling group to raise funds for its Outreach program.  It has a scholarship  fund for Fil-Am youth in college. (Visit http://filamfoundation.nm.googlepages.com).

Another association (whose members are also with FAFNM) is the Filipino American National Historical Society Rio Grande (FANHS RG).  This website is an ad-hoc website of FANHS RG. Visit FANHS RG, Pamana, and Videos.  (This website is maintained by Kidstale.  Visit http://kidstale-nm.com.)

There are groups of Fil-Ams in Gallup, Farmington, Las Cruces, and other areas (Visit Where to find Filipinos in NM).   You will generally find Filipinos in bases, hospitals, churches, and in businesses owned by them.

The Albuquerque Historical Society (www.albuqhistsoc.org) hosted a lecture forum on "The Filipino Americans' Contribution to New Mexico" on April 20, Sunday, at the Albuquerque Museum.  This was co-sponsored by the Filipino American National Historical Society Rio Grande Chapter (FANHS RG).  The speakers (from left) were:  Dr. Dely Alcantara who talked about Philippine History, the Philippine-New Mexico Connection, and Migration of Filipinos to New Mexico (brochure); Celia Tomlinson, first female engineer in NM (who happens to be a Filipina) talked about her book, Don't Tell Me You Can't.  Both Dely and Celia were recipients of the Governor's Award for Outstanding Women in New Mexico (2004, 1999 respectively).  Emilie Underwood, president of FANHS RG, talked about the Filipino community and the Pamana Awards given to Filipino Americans who have contributed to NM.  The Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerquepresented a brief number and invited participants to dance.  Approximately 40 people attended the event.  We want to thank the Albuquerque Historical Society (see photo of AHS members learning a dance with the Kulintang Ensemble) for giving us a chance to share our Philippine-New Mexico history and heritage.

The Fiesta Filipino-Santacruzan on May 17, Sat. at the Old Town Plaza, Albuquerque was attended by tourists, locals and the Filipino American community.  It was co-sponsored by the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico (FAFNM) and the Cultural Services of the City of Albuquerque.  The event started at 1:00 pm and ended at 9:00 pm.  Performers were: the Rondalla group of Chuy Martinez of the Cultural Services, followed by his Jazz group, the Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque, Fil-Am Cultural Group (photo above), Joe Miranda, Jam Morales, and Jam's Voice students.   The mass started at 5:30 at the San Felipe de Neri followed by the procession around the plaza.  All guests were treated to a Filipino cuisine.  Part 2 of the Cultural Show showcased Tessie Greenfield and her puppets, the Fil-Am Cultural Group, and Jam Morales again.  This is the first time FAFNM has combined two major events in one day.

Fil-Am picnic/potluck
on June 7 at the Bataan Park in Albuquerque had a big turn-out.  It was held next to the "Veterans for Sen. Udall" group in the park.  Sen. Udall gave a speech and savored the
Filipino dishes brought by the members.   The June picnic was an annual celebration of the independence of the Philippines from Spain which had colonized the country for over 350 years.  It is also the annual membership drive (and renewal of dues) reminder.  If you have not renewed your membership ($10 a year) or you want to join, you can send it to FAFNM, P. O. Box 94146, Albuquerque, NM 87199.  For inquiry about FAFNM, you can contact Maida at 903-0202.
