A biennial celebration that honors Filipino Americans (and non-Filipinos who have contributed to the Fil-Am experience). We will miss you, Josephine!Josephine (Josefa "Fita") Elfides Armijo passed away peacefully on May 24, 2010 at Vista Care. Fita was born in Corrales in 1926. She was 84. Fita was preceded in death by her first husband Simplicio Galbiso (with Fita in this photo taken in 1943), a migrant worker from Ilocos Norte, Philippines, and her second husband, Juan Stevens of Alameda, NM, grandson David S. Galbiso and infant son, Lawrence Galbiso. She is survived by her children: Louella Galbiso, Josephine Galbiso Martinez (son-in-law, Arthur Martinez), David Galbiso (past president and co-founder of the FANHS RG), Mary Jane Galbiso (companion Daryl Qualls), Sydney (Isabel) Galbiso Aschert (son-in-law, Frank Aschert), Danny Galbiso and Elissa Diana Galbiso McDowell. Josephine was one of the pioneer New Mexicans who married a Filipino in the 60's. She received a Pioneer Award from Filipino American National Historical Society Rio Grande (FANHS RG) in 2000. Kevin Liou (see photo in "Kudos") was one of the three Outstanding Asian Youth Awardees honored at the Asian Festival of Cultures on May 15, 2011 at the Civic Plaza. He has been involved in the anti-tobacco project for youth (using puppets) for 5 years (2003-2005, 2009-2010). He received a plaque and a cash prize of $300 from the Asian American Assn. of NM and Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC). He is the second Asian puppeteer to receive the award. The first was Emma Ye (see below). Twelve youths from the Indian, Korean and Laotian communities completed a shadow puppet workshop from Aug 4 to 6 at the NM Asian Family Center (NMAFC) building. It is funded by Tobacco Use Prevention and Control which is on Phase 3 (July 2010 to June 2011). Click here for details. ![]() Congratulations to our puppeteers, Kevin Liou, My-Anh Nguyen, Aimie and Emma Ye for winning the 2010 "Talk Back to Big Tobacco! Script and TV Storyboard Contest." They are all past and present puppeteers of the NM Asian Family Center Youth Performance Group. My-Anh, Aimie & Emma won the storyboard category with a display centered on the top five causes of death in the nation with tobacco usage as No. 1. Kevin won the radio spot category "Smokey Future" featuring a fortune teller predicting a smoker's health. Their work will be produced sometime this year. We'll keep you posted! The contest was sponsored by the New Mexico Literacy Project. Emma Ye (far right in the right photo) received the Asian American Outstanding Youth Award from Ligaya White, chairperson of Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) which co-sponsored the award with the Asian American Assn. of NM. The FAPAC banquet on May 8 at Kirtland AFB honored Emma and two other Asian youth awardees, Kristi Mishra and Francis Ong.
